Conceptual photography is one of my favorites to browse (especially on instagram where there are loads of talented artists), however I’m a bit old fashioned in I like to push things beyond relying on technology. Don’t mistake me, I’m a complete photoshop junkie and I adore a piece of well put together photo manipulation, but when possible I like learning how to capture an idea in the flesh before incorporating manipulation into the work flow.
My photography teacher assigned me a study in movement, and after wracking my brain for the better part of the afternoon while working in the school studio, a flood of ideas came to me. Before attempting a falling series, I grabbed the Canon T40 50mm film camera and went on a walk with my mum and my dog.
Upon returning, I grabbed a bit of water and gathered my tripods and Fujifilm Finepix. I actually shot a bit in a different dress, but found that the scene was too light to stand out so I switched into my black dress.
I used a ten second self-timer and a 20 shot burst for each time I pressed the shutter, so it was a matter of waiting for the burst to start and jumping correctly.
Believe it or not, there are ways to jump nicely for photographs and ways to not jump so nicely. I haven’t quite mastered that, and I did manage to hurt myself in the process. Despite being on a mattress, I slammed down and the mattress collapsed so that I fell on the board under the mattress. Needless to say, my back is not quite up to par today.
If you breathe out while falling, apparently it will relax your body so that it will take the fall better (and you won’t end up with a hurting back).
I’m going to keep working with this concept over the next few weeks (until it is time to leave for Florida!) and hopefully develop some more ideas to go along with it.
